Online Marketing

Good marketing is good marketing, the internet just puts another spin on it

If you opened a shop in the street where you live, it’s easy to imagine that your neighbours, friends and family would be aware of it. Most likely they would be your first customers. They might even tell their friends.

Beyond this little group, however, you would need to start persuading strangers to visit your shop. Preferably strangers who want to buy what you have for sale. You'd want to know who your potential customers are and where they congregate, live or visit. Then you'd want to find some way of telling them where your shop is and what it sells.

Launching a shop (or a service or product) on the internet presents similar challenges. You'll need to have an idea of your potential customer 'profile'. Then you'll need to find out where they visit or congregate. Then you'll need to attract them to your wares.

Search engines

Most people who use the internet find what they’re looking for using one of the top search engines. Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc. Given that up to 80% of the people who visit a website can be directed there by one (or all) of these search engines, it’s pretty important that your website is listed in their directories.

The big search engines are constantly monitoring all of the web using software applications called ‘bots’. The bots, or 'spiders' follow link after link and ‘read’ millions of web pages per day, automatically filing each page in the relevant place in their search engine’s directory. They do this by anaylsing each page’s content – text, links, urls, image names, code, etc.
